Kunnummal Grama Panchayat is situated on the Muttungal–Pakramthalam Road in Vadakara Taluk, about 15 kilometres east of Muttungal. There are seventeen hills, both large and small, within the Panchayat. It is said that the Panchayat got its name “Kunnummal” because it is located amidst a “cluster of hills.”
Abundant water resources are a natural blessing of this Panchayat. Ponds and perennial streams were the major sources of water. Many of the streams have been filled in today, while the remaining ones begin to dry up from January onwards.
There has been considerable depletion of biodiversity and natural resources. According to the basic map, Kunnummal once had 119.11 hectares of paddy fields. Today, only 10 hectares remain. The depletion of paddy fields has resulted in flooding during the monsoon season and drought during the summer.
A review of the history of natural disasters in previous years shows that Kunnummal is a geographical area that has not suffered major damage from natural disasters.
